Abstract:
Castanopsis hystrix is one of the important evergreen broad-leaved tree species in south China forest. A climatic distribution zoning of C. hystrix was conducted using principal component analysis and clus- ter analysis based on 1950-2000 climate data worldwide from 22 climatic sample plots of their distribution re- gion. The results showed that there were close correla- tions between latitude and seasonal temperature, the lowest temperature in the species distribution areas with correlation coefficients of 0.71 and -0.72, respectively. The precipitation of driest month was closely correlated to annual temperature range and the average tempera- ture of the driest quarter with correlation coefficients of 0.72 and -0.71, respectively. Principal component anal- ysis indicated that four climatic factors (precipitation of coldest quarter, mean temperature of warmest quarter, precipitation of warmest quarter and maximum tempera- ture of warmest month) were the most important pa- rameters discriminating variation among the 22 climatic samples. The distributional region of C. hystrix could be divided into four climatic regions: south subtropical region, mid-subtropical region, West Asia tropics region and north tropical region, which are differentiated by precipitation and temperature.
